Today's installment of the Marisol drama:

American Girl author says critics misunderstand book

Not very long, or not much that hasn't been said before.

As I thought about this, I remember reading TONS of books growing up about kids who moved from the city (usually NYC) to the suburbs because it was safer, nicer, better opportunities, whatever. I don't remember such a fuss like this, and it's not even like (from what I understand) it's the main focus of the book.

Although my daughter has Marisol, we haven't read her story yet. She's just 5 and I thought I would wait until she was a little older. It sounds like the leaders of this community have not really read the book either. The leaders have been quoted as saying "Pilson does have a small gang problem" - sounds to me that a move to the suburbs might indeed be a safer place for a child. I don't understand why they are making such a fuss over this.

Is it me? or this getting worse? I wonder what AG will do with Marisol and the book. Last time Mattel was "attacked" with a doll in neg, they took the doll off the shelves! And that was a year or so ago. Or maybe AG will pull off the shelves the book only and reword it?

As Cleopatra of the Nile said,

"As I thought about this, I remember reading TONS of books growing up about kids who moved from the city (usually NYC) to the suburbs because it was safer, nicer, better opportunities, whatever. I agree completely. Nowadays, it seems like people just look for things to complain about. So many times people jump to conclusions before hearing the whole story. I wonder why this is??? Or maybe it's always been this way and there wasn't so much media to report on it???

I don't know, but I just wish they could just leave us alone to enjoy our dolls. (the one good thing I noticed, though, was the live link to AG at the bottom of at least one of the articles. )

From AG Teacher: Is it me? or this getting worse? I wonder what AG will do with Marisol and the book. Last time Mattel was "attacked" with a doll in neg, they took the doll off the shelves! And that was a year or so ago. Or maybe AG will pull off the shelves the book only and reword it?

Are you refering to the Barbie doll that said "I hate math" and other demeaning things. That (in my opinion) had good reason to be pulled. The evidence was there and apparent that it was insulting. With the book (I read it) I can not find what the big deal is. The idea I got from that sentence was that they wanted Marisol to have a yard to play in (The American dream again), so that there is no risk when playing in the street (in a city no less). Maybe it is all in the eye of the beholder.

    Just my thoughts.
